Interns (Work placements)

Our internships are short-term, structured and supervised placements to provide practical experience. They may form part of a degree or college course, or simply be an opportunity to broaden skills and knowledge. The UKHO offers 12-week and 12-month placements. Please keep an eye on this website for opportunities to apply for in 2017.



Work Experience

Our work experience opportunities run for one week in either May or July (dates to be confirmed, subject to local schools).  Applications for work experience are now closed.



We are committed to apprenticeships and the benefits they bring to both UKHO and the apprentices themselves. Our apprenticeships are made up of both externally recruited apprentices and existing employees.

Some key benefits of UKHO apprenticeships:

  • They provide valuable skills and experience to apprentices, which will support their future careers

  • We have the ability to develop talent in specialist skills areas, where it may have been difficult to recruit suitable candidates e.g. software engineers/developers

  • Existing managers/employees are encouraged to mentor or coach an apprentice, helping to reinforce a strong learning culture


Listed below are the frameworks we currently have in place with approved training providers.


IT Profession - Level 3

This is a framework that has been developed by MOD, with their training provider, Capita.


Business Administration Level 3

This framework is delivered by Bridgwater and Taunton College.

Our staff are based at our headquarters in Taunton, Somerset, working in a number of roles, including specialist scientific branches, defence, management, accounting, survey processing, mapping and charting, project management, sales and marketing, HR, PR, printing and logistics. Some of our specialist areas have become internationally recognised Centres of Excellence.
