Interns (Work placements)


Our internships are short-term, structured and supervised placements to provide practical experience. They may form part of a degree or college course, or simply be an opportunity to broaden skills and knowledge. The UKHO offers 12-week and 12-month placements. Please keep an eye on this website for opportunities to apply for in 2017.

 

 

Work Experience


Our work experience opportunities run for one week in either May or July (dates to be confirmed, subject to local schools).  Applications for work experience are now closed.

We are always looking for talented and skilled individuals to join the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) to complement our existing team. Our apprenticeship scheme can help you to develop these skills under the mentorship of internal experts while furthering your education and gaining a formal qualification at the same time.

What roles does the UKHO offer?​


Since January 2016, we have offered a range of apprenticeship roles offering a combination of on-the-job training and structured learning offsite. Apprentices will gain experience of working within a real business environment, while developing specialist skills and knowledge.

There are a range of apprenticeship roles available at the UKHO, with positions available in many departments across the business. Below, we've outlined each of these roles and what to expect.

 

Technology


Work across a range of roles within IT and telecommunications, developing practical knowledge and skills across software, web and telecoms. In this role you will work towards a Level 4 IT qualification.


Data Analysis


Gain experience in using a range of bespoke databases and geospatial management tools, and be responsible for handling hydrographic and marine geospatial data. You will be working towards a Level 4 Data Analyst qualification.


Marketing Communications


Work within a team responsible for developing the world-leading ADMIRALTY brand, developing content, publishing on social media, updating websites and managing projects. In this role you will work towards a Level 5 Digital Marketing qualification.


Business Administration


Work across a number of departments including Customer Services, Procurement and the Customer Division and develop skills fundamental to any business environment while completing a Level 3 Business qualification.


Human Resources


Gain experience of working across all areas of HR, supporting the team throughout the entire employee lifecycle - from recruitment to leavers. In this role you will work towards a Level 5 HR qualification.


Finance


Support our Finance department, completing a wide range of tasks from processing financial transactions, to providing reports and analysis. Complete a Level 2 Finance qualification, with the option to progress to Level 3.


Cyber Security


Work as a technologist, providing risk analysis and delivering solutions to protect the organisation. Develop and understanding of cyber threats and information security, while working towards a Level 4 Cyber Security qualification.

Our staff are based at our headquarters in Taunton, Somerset, working in a number of roles, including specialist scientific branches, defence, management, accounting, survey processing, mapping and charting, project management, sales and marketing, HR, PR, printing and logistics. Some of our specialist areas have become internationally recognised Centres of Excellence.
